Phaedra DeLeo
MS Student
Since graduating with my Bachelors of Science from Hofstra University in the Spring of 2026, I have joined Hofstra’s Biology graduate program and am working towards achieving my Masters of Science. In my undergraduate years I built a strong foundation in genetics research in a Plant Biology lab. Now, I am excited to continue my learning in the field of Cancer Biology which aligns with my medical focus. In addition to my studies and research contribution, I work in a Vascular Surgery office and teach undergraduate Biology labs in preparation for a future in medicine. Outside of my professional aspirations, I enjoy traveling to warmer places, going to Tuesday night trivia, and doting on my cherished cat, Furgalicious.
Melodie Duran
MS Student
I am a second year Master of Science in Biology student with an interest in how epigenetic modifications impact pathophysiology. Outside of the lab, I teach an undergraduate Biology lab class. I also like to read and hike. Looking forward, I hope to use the skills I've learned in the Fisher Lab to pursue a career in cancer-related research.
Christine Ianniello
Post-Baccalaureate Student
I’m a Syracuse University graduate currently completing Hofstra’s Pre-Medical Post-Baccalaureate Program while working as a medical scribe. My previous experience in a plant physiology and ecology lab sparked my interest in research, and I am grateful for the opportunity to pursue work more directly connected to human health. I’m especially excited to learn about the molecular mechanisms underlying HNSCC and develop hands-on skills in cancer research. I hope to attend medical school and carry the knowledge and skills I gain into my future career as a physician. Outside the lab, I enjoy ceramics, playing guitar, skiing, and hosting dinner parties with friends!
Ryan Murphy

At Hofstra University, I am pursuing a degree in Biology on the pre-medical track, with the goal of attending medical school and pursuing a career in healthcare, specifically surgery. In addition to my research in the lab, I am engaged in research at both the Hospital for Special Surgery and Lenox Hill Hospital. As a physician, I hope to continue my involvement in research and contribute to advancements that improve patient care. Outside of academics and research, I enjoy weightlifting, playing basketball, and golfing.
Helena Kamberis

I am a third-year Biology major on the pre-medical track at Hofstra University, with aspirations of attending medical school and pursuing a career as a physician. Outside of the lab, I currently work as a medical assistant in a surgical ophthalmology practice, where I continue to develop my clinical skills and passion for patient care. In the lab, I am investigating the role of TINAGL1 in the tumor microenvironment and its influence on cancer-associated fibroblasts in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Through this opportunity, I hope to develop foundational laboratory and research skills that I can carry into my future career as a physician, where I aspire to combine clinical practice with translational research to contribute to clinical trials and advancements in treatments to improve patient outcomes.

I am a third-year Pre-Medical Studies major and BS/MD candidate with a passion for exploring the molecular mechanisms that drive cancer development and therapeutic resistance. My project focuses on how tumor–microenvironment interactions influence cancer behavior and treatment response. Through this work, I hope to contribute to translational approaches that improve patient outcomes. Outside the lab, I am a competitive ballroom dancer and enjoy reading and exploring new cuisines with friends.
Youbin Kim

I’m a third year Pre-Physician Assistant Studies major and part of the dual degree PA program here at Hofstra. I particularly have an interest in the epigenetic modifiers involved in oncogenesis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. I am grateful for this opportunity to be able to dive deeper in this field of research, tying together the knowledge of both genetics and biochemistry. Outside of the lab, I like to play volleyball, go swimming, workout, and spend time with friends. In the future, I hope to become a cardiothoracic surgery PA and use the skills I learn from this lab in research later down the line.
